U.S. Census Bureau seeking applicants

“It’s good work, and was just the job I needed right now,” said Carl Petee of Port Austin, a recruiter for the 2010 Census, “They hire us to work in our own hometown, because we know it best.”

Census workers are actively recruiting throughout the county to find applicants to work the next phase of the Census. Anyone who is interested in working for the 2010 Census should apply and take the employment test. In Huron County, application and testing are held weekly in Bad Axe, Caseville, Harbor Beach, Kinde, Pigeon, Port Austin, Port Hope, and Sebewaing. Interested applicants should call toll-free (866) 861- 2010 and schedule the most convenient time and location. The multiple-choice test measures the skills necessary for Census work, including clerical skills, reading, number skills, evaluating alternatives, and organization skills. It is recommended that an applicant take the practice test prior to the actual scheduled employment test. Practice tests are available at the Bad Axe Michigan Works office or online at www.2010censusjobs. gov.

Hiring is scheduled to begin in early spring. Census jobs are typically temporary, part time, and may last up to several weeks. Most of the work will consist of going door to door collecting data. The most productive time to collect this data is during the evening and on weekends when people are at home. The current rate for Census Takers is $14 per hour plus mileage.

“Pass the information along to everyone you know,” said Petee. “There are still jobs near where you live.”

For information, or to schedule an interview, please call Petee at (989) 627-1237, or contact him via e-mail at beaconbaptist@gmail.com.
