BAHS donates to Peace Corps

BAD AXE - Recently, students and staff at Bad Axe High School organized and participated in a “penny war” to benefit the Peace Corps’ efforts in Cameroon in western Africa, raising $853 in one week’s time.

The effort began when BAHS graduate Kate Cook contacted the school about the need for Books for Africa, an organization through the Peace Corps that works to raise funds for muchneeded books for African villages.

Cook’s specific project, Books for Cameroon, has been a year in the making. Her group has selected five schools to receive one thousand books each, and they are well on their way to raising the necessary money.

BAHS Student Council organized the collection to coincide with the school’s Homecoming activities. Wayne Brady, BAHS principal, said, “I’m so proud of our kids. Even in these tough economic times, for them to give that much money is amazing!”

Deanna Bingham, high school teacher, added, “One of my students handed me $60 – of his own money, not his parents’. That tells you what kind of kids we have here.”

Brady stated that Homecoming week was even better this year, because of the charitable giving of the students and staff.
